Haw River always steals my glance with their southern and subtle branding, the artistry in both their unique beer style and overall look is excellent. I've had their breakfast Dubbel and i'm in love with it, I've missed it and with their self distribution the availability is respectfully limited; making it all that more precious when I find Haw River's ales at Benchmark or Proper here in Boone, NC. Newlin's oatmeal style ale caught my eye instantly, a pale ale with added flaked oats to a Belgian yeast? Okay, I have to try this. I loved the fact that it was aged as well, bottled in 2016; the initial aroma was almost breaded and malty with a solid hint of oatmeal and this dry fruit almost raisin scent. The body was hazy and held a golden, almost copper tone in it's color, giving you this instant connection to farmhouse ales that they are known for. The foam head stayed white and tall, presenting you with this chunky foam that remained sticky on the edge of my glass. The head-retention was constant and thick, but appreciated and inviting.The first sip is heavy and forward with a delightful oatmeal character met with a solid malty and hoppy finish. The Belgian yeast adds a well-rounded profile while giving you this malty and oatmeal backbone to break up those hops at the end of each taste. This was a unique-refreshing take on a pale ale, loved it. Thank you Haw River!
