Beer Pairings | 2016 Even More Jesus Imperial Stout & Nub Cigars Maduro

August 18, 2017

On this introductory installment of Beer Pairings we pair up the Even More Jesus Imperial Stout from EvilTwin Brewing with the Nub Cigars Maduro. If you love dark tasting things then this match-up offers a nice one two punch you have been looking for, literally. Take it slow with this combo or risk getting the "spins". With the Nub Maduro's nicotine rush and the hefty Even More Jesus 12% ABV, it's no wonder it can be a little overwhelming if you don't know what you are getting yourself into. I definitely suggest this pairing if you are looking to treat yourself, or a friend, and have some time on your hands because this beer is definitely a sipper.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                When you first open this bottle of 22 oz heaven you immediately  get hit with the aroma of roasted coffee and cocoa. I suggest using a snifter glass for this brew, but hey do what you want. As soon as you begin pouring you may ask yourself, "Are we sure this isn't motor oil?" But don't worry its not. Coming from the bottle you can tell this beer is thick, yet surprisingly silky as is glimmers in the sunlight. As the beer settles in the glass it develops a thin dark brown foam head, the darkest I have ever seen, that dissipates quickly. Before lighting the cigar I take a sip and let the flavors wash over my palette. Damn that's good.      Again, the cigar I have chosen for this pairing is the Nub Maduro, a 4 by 60 stick, a shorty but a fatty. Before lighting the aroma is very woody, mainly cedar, yet nice and sweet, not peppery at all. While taking the first puff I am surprised by how good the draw is, in my experience larger ring gauge cigars can have a tight draw. After getting through the initial burnt tobacco flavor of a freshly lit cigar my pallet is welcomed by a sensual mix of chocolate and cedar. This being my first cigar from Nub I'm pretty impressed already. I take one more puff to ensure it is properly lit and well...because it is just delicious.
Sipping the stout again I am surprised by how rich the flavor is. The body is thick with very dark notes of cocoa. As you drink you begin to pick up the more subtle flavors hidden within. I notice hints of dark roasted coffee, wood, and even bourbon! The flavor profile is rich and has had time to meld together as it has been bottle aged for a year. It pairs extraordinarily well with the Nub Maduro. Even though they carry similar flavors the cigar's notes are lighter and sweeter compared to the stout's, giving you the full range of each from this dessert-like combo.                                                                                                                                             If you haven't tried this pairing I highly recommend it. I would say this would be great for after dinner or as a night cap. Definitely do not partake in this pairing on an empty stomach or again you may risk getting the spins. If you being to get begin to feel sick, here is a great little remedy I learned. Simply eat a little bit of sugar or a sugar cube and it takes that nauseous feeling right away.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                       Thank you for checking out this Beer Pairing article and let me know what you think in the comments below!
